HOERBIGER emDOC: An innovative electromagnetic comfort claw

With the electromagnetic dog clutch emDOC, HOERBIGER has combined the advantages of a mechanical dog clutch and an intelligent electromagnetic actuator and expanded it with a sensor for determining the position. The smart 3-in-1 solution is wear-free, reduces installation space, weight and costs. The intelligent sensor technology and control system ensures maximum comfort and the best NVH behaviour.

The innovative HOERBIGER emDOC is an efficient ON/OFF clutch for safe torque transmission that can be used in a variety of ways in HEV and BEV drives: as a connect / disconnect application, for multi-speed, as a DiffLocker or as a parking lock.

The electromagnetic dog clutch consists of a reduced number of components due to the elimination of external mechanics, which means that installation space and weight as well as costs can be saved.

Different designs and flexible use

The HOERBIGER emDOC is scalable, which makes the product very flexible.

Thanks to a compact all-in solution of dog clutch and actuation, the system offers a high level of integration.

Depending on the requirements and safe-state position, the innovative coupling is available in different versions: as a mono- / bi- or tri-stable variant.

The emDOC can take into account different voltages depending on the customer’s application: 12 volts, 24 volts, 48 volts, even voltages of more than 48 volts can be achieved with the electromagnetic dog clutch.

Smart design and reliable function

The emDOC system is characterized by its smart design, which enables high-precision and efficient control. The core of the system consists of a mechanical dog clutch system to transmit the torque and a mechatronic system consisting of an electromagnetic actuator and a position sensor.

The system is actuated by energizing a copper coil. This generates a magnetic field that is arranged radially to the sliding sleeve by the stator. This magnetic field pulls the sleeve into the desired end position. The special feature of this technology is the absence of permanent magnets, which avoids the risk of iron particles adhering. This guarantees trouble-free operation over the entire service life of the system.

The complete integration of the electromagnetic actuator into the dog clutch system, without the use of additional ratios or mechanical components, enables extremely fast and efficient gear shifts. Thanks to the contactless actuation of the moving components, the system works wear-free and ensures precise positioning over the entire lifetime.

The shifting processes are carried out completely contactless and directly at the sleeve. This technology ensures that the positions from the first to the last circuit are exactly adhered to, without wear or impairment of functionality.
